Lujos wins a contest!

Well, I did, actually, not Lujos as such, but it’s almost the same, right?

I saw the contest via one of my Facebook friends. It was to do with a new restaurant opening in Puerto Banus (i.e. glitzy town on the coast). The restaurant is called “Huerto”, which means garden in Spanish. So you can probably get the idea already – it’s about locally sourced, fresh food. The stated aim of the owner/chef is to not have a set menu, but only serve what is fresh on the day.

It’s a good idea. Since growing our own food at Casa Tyr, we have discovered that there is a vast difference between your own home-grown food and food shipped from even a few hundred miles away. We should know that, as it makes so much sense, but after a lifetime of buying from supermarkets, that knowledge was lost to us until recently.

Anyway, my entry was about our local pork butcher – Miguel Merino. He owns a butcher’s shop in the village – Ibericos Yunquera. He only sells pork products there. He is fanatic about his products – so much so that he grows his own grain, that feeds his pigs, that he butchers himself, that he makes into pork products.

“Taste the Difference”, says Tesco supermarket? Really? Well, try Miguel’s meat, and you really can taste the difference!
