I’m talking about my granddaughter again today, so if you are tired of baby talk, look away now! 🙂

In talking to my daughter, it’s interesting to note that the topic of “firsts” is still as hot as it was when I was a new mother. Parents wait eagerly for every first in their child’s life – the first smile, the first lifting of the head, the first step, and so on.

All babies vary in when they do their first “anything”, of course. For some odd reason, probably throughout eternity there has been a competition amongst mothers as to when your baby does “something” versus when someone else’s baby has! I don’t know why this is, but that’s the way it is, folks.

I remember talking to my pediatrician years ago, as I was concerned that my daughter wasn’t walking soon enough. (my friend’s little girl was walking at 12 months). He was a great guy, who delighted in his small charges. His encouraging words were

I get asked questions like this all the time, because mothers worry. But you know, by the time children go to kindergarten, they all are potty trained, they all can walk and they all can talk. How soon before that they do those things doesn’t really matter.
