…the prodigal returns

Back where we came from, reluctant returnees.

And so another decade ends

Today is the last day of 2010, but you probably already know that!

It only just occurred to me that today is also the last day of a decade, and tomorrow starts a new decade. It’s not rocket science to come to that realization, I know, but it really hit home with me for some reason.

I can remember back to a New Year’s Eve some years ago, when the last decade was just beginning. And a new century, too. Remember the “Y2K” doom and gloom? There were predictions of computers failing, the world as we know it ending. And guess what? Nothing catastrophic happened.

Everyone we knew was having NYE parties at home, to avoid the heavy taxi charges. Kenton and I were living in a different country then, doing different jobs, and didn’t even know that we’d end up moving to Spain. We were 10 years younger, with fewer aches and pains!

We had different dogs then. Two people in our respective families had not yet married (or divorced). People we loved were still alive. 9/11 and 7/7 had not happened. We didn’t have troops in Iraq or Afghanistan.

It’s truly amazing how much can happen in just one decade – and it would be very easy to become maudlin about the past, but we don’t! Life is always about change, and we can’t expect it all to be good. But nor is it all bad! In those 10 years, we’ve moved to Spain, learned a new language, made new friends, have a healthier lifestyle, and started 2 businesses!

I’m going to bookmark this page, and look back at it at the end of the next decade. If blogging still exists, it should make a good read!
