…the prodigal returns

Back where we came from, reluctant returnees.

Lujos has a burst of energy!

I had a very strange night’s sleep last night. First odd thing – I had a dream, which was all in Spanish! This is the first time since we’ve lived here that that has happened. I wonder what it means? Anything? Nothing? I don’t know.

Second odd thing – when I woke up, I thought “wow, it’s hot already today”. (OK, first thoughts of the day aren’t always brilliant!) Then, “I think we should get out right away and water the gardens”.

Now, anyone who knows me knows that that is an outrageous thought for me to have. Why? Well, I guess you’d say that I’m not a morning person! Years ago, a doctor said I probably took longer to get going than most because I had fairly low blood pressure. Honest, he did say that! So that means it’s not just because I’m lazy!

I also do not do well before I’ve had my coffee. My husband has learned through years of experience that deep conversations are not in order before I’ve had my coffee. Or asking me to do anything complicated. So normally, my assistance in preparing breakfast involves simple tasks with no sharp blades. Feed the dogs, for example. Pour the juice.

So getting out and working before coffee is not in keeping with my usual routine, one might say.

But I did! A quick cup of tea and a glass of juice, and out we went. We watered the 2 veg gardens at the bottom of the land. We picked an eggplant, some cukes, a few lettuces and a couple of tomatoes.

Then up to water the top garden and the flowers. After that, I harvested lavender, calendula petals, parsley and tarragon for drying. The big bunches of tarragon and parsley look really pretty hanging from the kitchen shelf to dry.

Then we finally had breakfast. And COFFEE. Ohmygod, it tasted sooooo good! We had bacon and tomato sandwiches with the tomatoes we’d picked an hour beforehand. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

And now, it’s early afternoon and our work is done for the day. And I’m feeling pretty smug for being so clever – but don’t expect this early burst of energy from me very often!

  1. just the thought of doing that much work before having any coffee has given me a caffeine headache.

    • I know!! It was unheard of!! Luckily, I did all that work before I realized I had had no coffee, otherwise I would have self-destructed!

  2. I stumbled across your blog by chance and have enjoyed reading your gardening entries. I hope to add a section on gardening myself sometime soon.
I have “played” with several herbs over the last several years. One of those herbs was borage but I just couldn’t get it to take. I was told it was an easy reseed here in New England. Not so! Now cilantro… Holy fajitas batman! That reseeded. Good thing I like to make bread out of the coriander.

    • Hi there, thanks so much for the comment! I love gardening, or at least the veg and herb variety! I like flowers, too, but they get less of my time because we don’t eat them!

I’ve had great luck with borage, as you can see by my blog! Less so with some of the other herbs, but for me, it’s all trial and error!
