Clinical trial, anyone?

Has anyone out there ever participated in a clinical trial? Any opinions generally as to the safety or usefulness of same?

The reason I ask is, I saw an article in the Independent which mentioned a third stage clinical trial that was looking for volunteers. The drug company pays your travel and expenses to Mexico or Guatamala, in exchange for you wearing a vaccine patch that delivers an anti-diarrhea drug (or a placebo, depending). You stay in a good hotel and just eat and drink normally – you don’t deliberately try to eat or drink anything iffy.

This sounds kinda cool to me. “Third stage” means that the drug has already been tested (on animals and humans) for safety and dosage. So it should be ok, right?

Of course, we all remember the case in London where volunteers for a clinical trial died or became very sick. And our friends think we’re nuts to even consider it.

But then…there’s still that ‘free’ trip…
