…the prodigal returns

Back where we came from, reluctant returnees.

Wind storms

They can be kind of scary up on the mountain! We are the highest house in the area, so we get hit hard no matter which direction the wind is coming from.

Last night and today, it has been blowin’ a gale from the North. It was only just a strong wind until about 3am, then ferocious gusts were added to the mix. To the tune of 100 kph, as a matter of fact.

A big crack woke us up – Kenton, brave man that he is, went outdoors in all that wind to check it out. Although annoying, it was fairly minor – the guttering on the back of the house was blown down.

Once awake, though, we laid there listening to the wind. It howled and howled. Rattling the shutters until I was sure they would be ripped off. Unknown things banging around. The oddest thoughts start to run through your mind, like:

  • are the solar panels and wind turbine ok in this? (yeah, I know, I know – they should be, as they have lived through 6 years of winds!)
  • will Kenton be hit by a log blowing around if he goes outside again? (True story! This almost happened a couple of years ago)
  • does this spell the end the bamboo matting over the back pergola?
  • will the wifi antenna blow down?

None of these things happened, thank goodness. And the wind has ‘calmed down’ to a mere 75 kph now. And look on the bright side – the wind could blow away the bad weather, and bring us some sunny days!
