A highland fling

our wee adventure on the Black Isle

Autumn chores

Well, I think the very warm weather is finally at an end. Or at least, it seems so. In its place is not the rain we were hoping for, but wind.

Now don’t get me wrong, here at Casa Tyr we like the wind! And need it! We live off grid, with electricity generation coming from our solar panels and wind turbine. So, if it’s not at least breezy, we have to rely on just the panels, which is not A Good Thing.

But, as usual, we either get loads of wind, or not at all! This week we’ve seen the LOW scenario – so I can, if I wish, run around using every electric appliance we own, and still have electricity to spare! But I don’t.

We have loads of chores set for ourselves for November, and so far, we’ve made a good start. We have:

  • sorted out our chimney’s ‘sombrero’ (the little whirlygig bit at the top that extracts the smoke). Note: this is now back on the list because the sombrero flew off in Sunday night’s wind!!!)
  • ordered fire glass for the fireplace
  • sorted out the top herb garden
  • fixed the rotovator
  • started the process of making beams from the pine logs on the drive (via our super-duper Logosol sawmill!!  Video to follow shortly!!)
  • ordered a new soap mould

Next on the list: rotovate the bottom garden, plant the winter veg, and feed the potatoes! Now who ever said we didn’t lead an exciting life?!
